In pursuit of Religion, on November 20th 2012, Skerrit Bwoy canceled all international, & local shows. As a solo artist, with the electronic group Major Lazer, & his reggae group Ghetto Life Entertainment. Leaving countless fans in ahhh. In March 2012 he DJ’ed 2 experimental shows on the electronic scene. First at Binghamton University, in New York. Then @ Throwed, in Cambridge MA. Both shows were well received by fans & media alike. How did it differ from any other of his previous shows, you ask? Well no daggering, no drinking, no profanity from him, or the music, is whats new. Skerrit bwoy is on a mission to, once again, change the face of entertainment as we know it.
SKERRIT BWOY PUTS DOWN THE DAGGER, PICKS UP THE CROSS
By Zipper Z

Skerrit Bwoy aka Dale Richardson, the daggering icon of the world, has given up daggering in the name of God. He says he will no longer practice the rhythmic dry hump that took him, and the dance move, out of Bronx dancehall parties and into the international spotlight. He will not jump off ladders unto women’s spread legs and hump with a choreographed expression of agony. Nor will he swear or listen to music with swear words.

In the last few weeks, that last vow lead him to delete—to his own estimation—between $30,000-$50,000 worth of dubplates from his hard drive. His musical cleanse includes the 2009 electronic dancehall track, “Pon Di Floor,” by the DJ duo Diplo and Switch otherwise known as Major Lazer. Skerrit Bwoy was the Major Lazer frontman, and it is in this video that he and daggering was first introduced to popular culture.

“Pon di Floor got to go,” he told me over the phone.

The transformation happened during a trip back home to Antigua. The Antigua Observer ran the story on December 2, 2011. The article reported he was cancelling all shows, but was to keep his signature triple-pointed yellow Mohawk.

I was surprised. He was giving up a lot.

Though dancing is an integral part of the dancehall scene, outside of Caribbean Culture, no one before Skerrit Bwoy, had received individual attention for this practice. His animated likeness was being drafted a show on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, Jimmy Kimmel was joking about him on his show with Aziz Ansari, he had a daggering instructional video, and he was touring the world. (DONT 4GET CNN & TRUE TV. LOL)

But I wasn’t just surprised by his massive career shift—he had defended daggering to me as an art form only a few weeks before. This was after a show at the 18+ event, Throwed, in Cambridge, MA, where he was selecting tracks and conducting a banana-eating contest. At the time, I was working on a piece about another controversial Jamaican comedy act, Twin of Twins. I called up Skerrit the next day, asking if he could speak to similar misperceptions about his art.

And he did call daggering art: “When you hear people talk about it, it’s like ‘ooh that’s nasty, can’t believe they are humping in the club,’ you know, but when you’re actually there you are just in it, there is a lot more comedy than nasty, you know, it’s not pornography or nothing like that, it’s just art.”

Months later he came back to Throwed. It was his second show since he had given up daggering. We met for pizza. He told me I was not about to see another banana-eating contest. He also told me about his religious transformation.

He was at church in Antigua, attending service by a Pastor named Upert Murray. Pastor Murray was talking to a woman about how she was prioritizing sex, money, and popularity over God.

“It wasn’t voices, it wasn’t no one told me nothing, or nothing like that. It was just a moment of realization where everything just made sense.”

In this moment he was overcome by the feeling that he was leading others astray.

“It was like, seeing myself in rule of a kingdom and setting up armies of sexual—amongst other sins—immoral solders to kill innocent people. I know it sounds crazy but that’s the best way I could put it.”

I thought I was going to leave thinking Skerrit was a fanatic and hypocrite. He is fanatical—be it for God or dry sex—it’s part of what makes him who he is. But try as I could to corner him into a contradictory statement—after spending the evening with him driving around listening to Caged Elephant on the radio, holding his giant cross necklace while he stagedived into a crowd of partially dressed teenagers, dancing to house music at a nearby club, and later over phone calls and email, I could not.

That’s because Skerrit said his own feeling about daggering hadn’t changed, it is his feeling about the impression he leaves on others that is evolving.

“When you hit a stage and it’s like 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, however many, a hundred people, looking at you, you can’t go to each one of those people and go, ‘listen, you see this daggering thing, man, it’s just entertainment, it’s not meant to be anything sexually explicit.’”

And he said behind his ladder dagger performances with Major Lazer was a club scene taking the art form to some unseemly heights—a legacy he did not want to pass on.

“Would it be cool if 15 years from now, 16 years from now, I’ve got a son in the club with his penis out in his hand trying to rape some girl in the corner? And that’s what it turned into.”

HQ Squad aka Fitzroy aka Ursher Collins, Skerrit Bwoy’s longtime friend, handler, and fellow Bronx selector said he watched Skerrit’s religious transformation unfold on Facebook on his Antigua trip.

“He was daggering to the soca and right after this man come back and start preaching to me. I said, ‘What happened in Antigua, yo?’”

But Skerrit’s move to the church didn’t seem so dramatic to those who knew him best. HQ Squad tells me that from Skerrit’s early club days at Club Savoy, God was still a part of his life even after a long night of Saturday-night partying, “In the morning, he would say, ‘mi a go church.’”

These days Skerrit Bwoy is going to a church called the Brooklyn Full Gospel Tabernacle and studying to become a producer. He tells me he wants to make gospel tracks that can be listened to casually and played in clubs.

He called his show in Cambridge an experiment—it was one of his first shows using Ableton Live.

There he played a sample of what he says will be his first track, “I See Hell,” a warped mix between Luciano’s classic, “Lord Give Me Strength,” and Max Romeo’s chorus, “I Chase the Devil.”

He has a few gigs lined up in the Bronx this summer, where he says he will prove that he can still DJ without slack dancehall music.

And he says we should expect “The Skerrit Bwoy Gospel Fest” in two years time. “The Coachella of Gospel music,” he explains.

“Just imagine all the Churches of New York City, just getting wild crazy, full of the Holy Ghost power, just getting crunk off updated gospel.”

8: If you heard him calling you all this time, why answer now? You on top of the world, cartoon bout to drop, album bout to drop, tours bout to start. Why now?

I tried to Justify my shows as entertainment. & as long as I was only entertaining, this was not my real life, it was fine.. But the message I was sending & the environments I was creating, was one of evil. Of flesh & vanity. I must change that now.

—
9: So since you hear voices, what should I do?

HOMIE, I DID NOT & DO NOT HEAR VOICES. DONT BE AN IDIOT.. I don’t even know what to do with myself yet. But I do know I can not serve both God & evil. Its an all or nothing deal. Left or right.. I suggest you analyze your life. Whether if its Heaven or Hell.

—
10: You gonna cut ya hair?

Hope not, Currently I have no plans to cut my hair. I personally see no need to render my garments. But to render my heart & soul. I personally believe my hair will be an example to everyone. That regardless of appearance, that you are welcome to the kingdom of God, as you are. But if I find out that I need to, yes I will.

—
11. I have been feeling the same way & I do not know what to do. I don’t think I’m ready for God yet, & I afraid of back sliding. Jesus gonna be mad if I do that.

Excuses! You could do anything you want in life. If someone said “Bet you $50,000,000usd that you can’t go without (insert sin here) for a year” you would do it. & won’t think twice about it.. So why should u second guess God, & eternal life?

—
If your in a questionable point in your life. Why wait for death, nothingness, & an eternity of torment to catch up. Please refrain from all sin & seek religious counseling. I suggest Pentecost, or what ever Church you grew up in.

I’m not a saint, or profit, or good example. I’m not telling you to choose a religion, or a church. Cause not everyone that say “in Jesus name” is genuine. But we are all grown folks, & if we could tell the difference between a real dj & a guy thats playing music. I’m sure finding real pastor won’t be an issue.

I will leave you with the words that saved me “Wake up. The house that you are in, is on fire. Grab ya soul & run for ya life”

Don’t wait till your sick, or old. Cause no man knows the minuet, or the hour of death. How many friends & family have you wished R.I.P… Hope you to run for your life & into the arms of God, Jesus your savior.

I leave you with this reading: Proverbs 3:1-35

Two Thousand and Ten is coming an end and what a year it was for the Dancehall. Dancehall music and the artist who sing many of the hit songs were in the headlines and for many, it wasn’t positive. The two reigning kings of Dancehall, Vybz Kartel representing Gaza and the Gully God himself Movado put aside their differences and came together for the “Peace Unity” concert, ending their long standing feud. This I thought would of been a sign of greater things to come. The U.S. revoked the visas of Beenie Man, Bounty Killa, Mavado, Idonia, Tony Matterhorn, Ricky Trooper and a number of other artist causing a panic amongst international promoters and fans alike. Soon “Pray For Jamaica” became a national cry for peace as military forces invaded Tivoli Gardens, in order to capture “The President” Dudus Coke. Blood ran red in the island of Jamaica as hundreds of residents took to arms to defend their turf and the man that they claim, has done more than the government, itself. The death of Oneil Edwards of Voicemail sent shockwaves as he was gunned down in front of his residents leaving the dancing faternity in a state of mourning and disbelief, from the loss of this non violent artist. The passing of legendary “Cool Ruler” Gregory Issac made awareness of the lack of appraisal of the artists of yesteryear. Speakers were going hammer for Bounty Killa as he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend with the tool and landed in prison numerous times this year. All wasn’t gloomy for dancehall as we were reminded of why we loved this artform in the first place with riddims like “One Day” that had us pouring rum and red bull in our cups, walking out in front of our matey to show dem “who is wife round here”, acknowledging our true friends as we sang, “mi nah sell out mi friend dem”, and despite it all, “I’m okay” reminded us that though things are rough, it could be worse. Gyptian charted the international charts with Ricky Blaze produced riddim for “Hold Yuh”, landing him on tour with Mary J. Blige and earning him a Soul Train award for best reggae artist, amongst other things. Dancehall didn’t belong only to Jamaica, it achieved greater cross over success with Diplo & Switch of Major Lazer hit song “Pon De Floor”. Frontman, Skerrit Bwoy introduced fans to the artform of “daggering”. Kartel sang “Clarks” and every store sold out of the famous footwear. Controversy struck again as Kartel’s appearance became even lighter as he sang about the use of “cake soap”. Critics blamed the dancehall artist for influencing, young and impressionable Jamaicans to “bleach”. Needless to say, 2010 was a much talked about year for dancehall music, for the positive and negative.
Saturday night, my hubby and I were lying in bed watching “Why Did I Get Married” and in between the constant side eyes, I was receiving, this line was said in the movie and I thought it would be perfect for a Question of the Day. “If your wife not giving you none, you have a LEGAL right to get some”. I had to laugh and of course, the hubby agreed with this fool. Now if you remember the movie, you would know that Jill Scott’s husband said that to Tyler Perry’s character, because he and wifey hadn’t have sex for 3 months. Now while some find that hard to believe, I’ve come across women who have actually kept the pum pum on lock for a much longer time frame. The reasoning behind the lack of sex was different, but the point was that sex had become such a distant memory that they had become accustomed and not even felt the need to receive it again. Now while I do believe that a healthy relationship does involve a great amount of love making, I do believe that if there is a time when the sex is no longer a part of the union, they do not have a right to get it else where. What happened to just talking about the issue at hand and coming to some kind of compromise/resolution? Like I said before, the women that held back on sex, had their reasons for doing so. I’m not sure if the husbands were aware of the reasoning, but this is something that should of been discussed prior to having an extramarital affair. So the hubby agrees with the quote. Not surprising, since he is a man that loves sex and can’t do without it. Though I’m not one to have sex everyday of the week, I do actually enjoy indulging in it quite often, so I wouldn’t fall into the category, but I would love to hear from you. What is your take on this issue? Does a man/woman have a right to get sex elsewhere if their companion is unwilling to do it? How long is too long? What are the factors that will cause you to be patient?

What is your take on this issue? Does a man/woman have a right to get sex elsewhere if their companion is unwilling to do it? How long is too long? What are the factors that will cause you to be patient?

It’s Saturday night, you’re at the club and the session is going real nice. You go to the bar to buy a drink and wait for the bartender to hand you that mango martini. Standing at the bar is this sexy rasta. Tall, brown and giving you the same look you are giving back to him. He introduces himself and so do you. You have a small conversation before exchanging numbers and going back to your respective corners. You don’t take him on, because you are convinced that all men, in the clubs are not be trusted. You leave club and go back to your place, but you receive a text from that guy, wanting you to meet him at Dennys, but you play hard to get, because you don’t want to come off easy. So you decline the invitation and decide to meet at another time. Days pass and the guy decides to come to your place, so you continue to play the tough role and decide to meet him outside your complex so that he has no idea which apartment you live in. Approaching him, you realize how gorgeous he is and you instantly become more attracted to him. The phone tag continues days and weeks later, until he decides to come to your place one night. Though you try to resist, you can barely stay cool, with all the heat rising throughout your body. Soon, the clothes are quickly torn off, the kisses become more intense and the hands begin to touch places that you wanted to touch from the moment you met. You are angered by the fact that he failed to tell you about the size of his manhood and the fact that he knew all the right places to put it. The sex was the best you had experienced in a long time and when the night ends, you are hoping that you will be able to reenact this session that you just created. Unfortunately, you realize, that your feelings for him are much stronger than his. You begin to wait by the phone, anticipating the next time, he will satisfy your every desire. You begin to call him constantly, without him returning any of your calls. Your friends are telling you to get over it and just take it for what it is, a “Hit and Run”. You soon come to your senses and realize that you’re a beautiful girl and know that you shouldn’t have to chase down, anyone. Just when you thought you were over him, you see his fine ass in the club again. He calls you over and starts to whisper in your ear about how sexy you look. The d.j. starts to play something slow and he pulls you over and the two of you begin to dance. With your bodies rubbing against each other, you are reminded of how bad you want to do it right in the middle of the club. He tells you to come...

With your bodies rubbing against each other, you are reminded of how bad you want to do it right in the middle of the club. He tells you to come to his place after the club, and you quickly race to his house. As he opens the door, the clothes are off, your bodies are wet, and your legs are in positions you never imagined it could go. You tell him how much you like him and hope that you can spend more time together, and he agrees. Yet again, you realize how difficult it is for him to keep his word and how quickly he has become your obsession. He’s the Mr. Big to your Carrie and you feel like you are caught in the whirlwind of Sex & The City. You’ve been schooled on this situation and you should know better, but you don’t listen to what you’ve been taught. You continue to wait on his phone calls and turn down dates with other men. “Get over him”! “Can’t you see that he doesn’t want you”. “But he said that he would call me”! “He’s probably out of town or maybe he lost his phone”. Weeks past, even months. You continue to accept his random invites and he continues to use you like the desperate loser you have become. When does the obsession end and the soul searching begin? Its not until that faithful day at Barnes & Nobles, when you picked up that little pink book titled “He’s Just Not That Into You”. You finally realized your worth! No need to lecture you, pick up the book, sit back and take notes. It saved my life!
